Syeda Asma Aziz is a Pakistani Central Banker with more than 26 years of regulatory experience in the State Bank of Pakistan. She was born in Nowshera, a district in the North-Western province, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa of Pakistan. She joined the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) through the 1st batch of flagship program of SBP, State Bank Officers Training Scheme (SBOTS) after clearing competitive examination and undergoing training at National Institute of Banking and Finance (NIBAF). At present, she is working as a Senior Deputy Chief Manager at the State Bank of Pakistan field office in Peshawar, Pakistan.
Her first posting after appointment was at the Head Office in Karachi in 1996 and was assigned to the Banking Inspection Department (BID), where she was instrumental in helping SBP fulfill its primary mandate to oversee financial institutions in order to preserve the stability of the financial system and to protect depositor interests, thereby fostering public trust in the system.
She has held a number of important positions throughout her career, including Chief Manager of field offices of SBP, Currency Officer, and Senior Deputy Chief Manager. She was the first female officer to hold important portfolios in the history of Pakistan, and as such, she serves as a role model for other female officers throughout the banking sector in KP, where the number of women in the financial industry is abysmally low. She also has practical expertise in the fields of government banking, currency management, auditing, and financial inclusion. She worked in government banking, where she opened and maintained government accounts and collected authorized funds and payments. She additionally offered vital services to the provincial and federal administrations, including safe deposit facility and remittances. While performing its advisory duties with the goal of improving operational effectiveness in relation to SBP's vision, she also continuously assesses the current directives, SOPs, and processes to adopt various improvements in its operations. Similar to this, she has worked on the implementation of policies and guidelines relating to currency management and government savings programs provided by the SBP in her capacities as a Currency Officer across 34 districts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. In the field of currency management, she has continually worked to implement worldwide best practices and use widely regarded technologies.
She is the principal link between various government and private sector organizations for the purpose of monitoring and reporting in the banking sector. She was ultimately responsible for creating and carrying out policy in significant fields. She played a significant role in establishing and encouraging collaboration amongst numerous stakeholders when implementing policy initiatives across multiple sectors prioritized by the Government of Pakistan and SBP.
